Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father left her family. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good fit there. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her show in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
